Mite Identification & Prevention

Get Rid Of Mites For Good

Mites are among the most wide-spread creatures on the planet, and yet because they are so small in size, they often go unnoticed. While most mite species are harmless to humans, some can still cause allergies, rashes, and make people sick. If you are worried about a mite infestation in your home, worry not — our pest control team at High Country Pest Control are experts at getting rid of all kinds of pests and are here to help you make sure that mites are completely eliminated from your home. Not only that, but we also provide prevention services so that they won’t come back.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mites

How can mites be identified?

While there are many different types of mites, one of the most common types we deal with here in Colorado are clover mites. These mites are smaller than the head of a pin, are reddish-brown in color, and are typically bigger of a problem during the spring and fall on south-facing/warm sides of homes and businesses. Another type of mite we see quite often is the spider mite, which is also smaller than the head of a pin, is translucent or brown in color, and commonly appears during drought-like conditions. Both of these mites typically cause damage to plants, but bigger problems occur when these mites move inside of homes and businesses. This is because there are typically hundreds to thousands of them, and because the clover mite is orange in color, they are often seen crawling along windowsills, flooring, computers, countertops, etc.

Dust mites are another type of mite that we see, which can live on bedding, upholstered furniture, mattresses, carpets, and other fabric items within a home or business. While these mites are a bit more uncommon at higher elevations, we still see them and can help you treat them. If you notice yourself sneezing or coughing, or have red, itchy skin that won’t go away (similar to allergies), don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be more than happy to check out your home to ensure that it isn’t due to pesky dust mites.

How can I prevent mites in the future?

While it is nearly impossible to prevent mites from coming into your lawn, there are several measures that can be taken to prevent these pesky mites from entering your home. Some of these include:

  • Removing grass and weeds up to 24 inches away from your home or business
  • Placing a plant-free band of wood chips, gravel, lava rock, etc. around the perimeter of your home or business to help keep mites away from the structure. Mites also have a much more difficult time crossing these types of barriers.
  • Avoiding lush host plant growth and excessive watering or fertilization near your home or business.
